What is Tourette syndrome?

Tourette Syndrome (TS) is an inherited, neurological disorder characterized by repeated involuntary movements and uncontrollable vocal (phonic) sounds called tics.

What are the symptoms?

The first symptoms of TS are usually facial tics - commonly eye blinking. However, facial tics can also include nose twitching or grimaces. With time, other motor tics may appear such as head jerking, neck stretching, foot stamping, or body twisting and bending.

TS patients may utter strange and unacceptable sounds, words, or phrases. It is not uncommon for a person with TS to continuously clear his or her throat, cough, sniff, grunt, yelp, bark, or shout.

Peter celebrates his thirteenth birthday in a few days. It continues to amaze us that we are still able to keep Peter's tics under control using only an all-natural health product. We're giving him once ounce, three times daily of this wonderful juice.

If we forget to give Peter his juice, the tics come back, or if he has a particularly stressful day, we catch a quick blink of the eye or mild vocal tic. We know the problem is still there, but, thank God, the nutritional juice is somehow meeting his need.

There is no longer the hitting of his shoulder with his chin. Nor are his legs jumping outward. Before, it was very difficult to even talk to him with the steady stream of quite noticeable, vocal tics he was experiencing, but now that's beautifully under control.

Let me tell you the story of how it all began....

When Peter was about five years old, he began blinking and squinting his eyes continually. A year or two later, as he was eating at the table with us, his sister Monika, who was sitting beside him, noticed he was making continual, annoying grunts.

The constant blinking and vocal grunts continued for several years, but we never paid much attention to them and never made an issue out of it. We hoped it would stop if we acted like we didn't notice it and thought it might just go away - thought he might just grow out of it, if we simply ignored it.

This went on for several years. Then things changed dramatically, shortly after Peter turned 11. Around Christmastime, we noticed Peter hitting his chin against his shoulder - sometimes his left shoulder, sometimes the right one.

I became very concerned at this very noticeable increase of involuntary behaviors. Then it reached a point where Peter even came to me, complaining about his annoying problem.

He told me he kept feeling something inside when it happened and it was really bothering him because he couldn't do anything to stop it. He also told me his legs kept jumping outward and he couldn't stop them. At the same time, the vocal grunts magnified to a point where you could hardly have a conversation with him.

On December 14, 2004, we scheduled an appointment with our family doctor to see what could be done to help Peter. After examining him, she felt he needed to see a specialist and referred us to Dr. Erenberg at Cleveland Clinic, who is a veteran pediatric neurologist, seeing only patients with Tourette Syndrome.

Unfortunately, the soonest Dr. Erenberg could see Peter was February 2, 2005. After an hour and a half exam by two medical doctors, Peter was diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome and ADHD without hyperactivity. The involuntary actions and vocal grunts we were told were tics.

The doctor wanted to prescribe Strattera, but when we found out how expensive it was, we were delayed by having to begin an application process for financial assistance - a long, drawn out procedure.

At the same time, a friend introduced us to a nutritional juice which we decided to try on Peter. We began giving him one ounce three times a day, really not expecting anything to change.

After five days, my husband Kurt turned to me and asked, "Have you noticed anything with Peter?"

I said, "Well, yes. I noticed the tics are gone." We thought maybe it was just a coincidence or that perhaps the tics had gone into some kind of remission. But then we discovered that if we missed one of the "doses" of the nutritional juice, the tics started coming back.

Just to be sure we weren't imagining things, we asked Peter's teacher if she had noticed any more tics. She assured us they were gone.

In the mornings or if we happen to forget to give him the nutritional juice, the tics reappear. It most definitely appears to be controlling the tics. We find this absolutely amazing!
